Project description
The project proposes a new triple gymnasium for the Torretta district in Bellinzona, conceived as a compact and recognisable civic building within the existing sports campus. Positioned to strengthen the relationship with the surrounding public facilities, the building enhances pedestrian connections while preserving the existing green areas and mature trees. The intervention reuses elements from the existing Palabasket, transforming prefabricated concrete panels and steel beams into new architectural, landscape and urban design components.
The building is organised around a clear and rational layout, with a regulation-size sports hall divisible into three independent courts, surrounded by changing rooms, fitness facilities, public areas, technical spaces and 1,507 spectator seats. Circulation routes for athletes, spectators, staff and logistics are kept separate to ensure functional efficiency, flexibility and ease of use during both everyday activities and sporting events.
The structure combines a recycled reinforced concrete podium with a lightweight timber superstructure composed of long-span timber trusses and CLT roof elements. Vertical timber cladding, limited glazing and a highly insulated envelope minimise energy demand while creating a restrained architectural expression. Designed to achieve the Minergie standard, the project integrates district heating, groundwater cooling, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, photovoltaic panels and extensive material reuse, ensuring low environmental impact throughout the building's life cycle.
